Passivation treatment of stainless steel

The necessity of passivation treatment for stainless steel

Stainless steel does not rust, it just rusts slower than other types of steel. The reason why stainless steel can prevent rust is because it adds metal elements such as chromium and nickel, which are easy to oxidize into a high-density passivation film. Therefore, stainless steel has relatively good rust prevention ability. However, in certain environments, such as coastal areas or humid warehouses, and when exposed to other acidic and alkaline agents, stainless steel will gradually corrode and rust over time.

Therefore, stainless steel needs to undergo passivation treatment. Adding a passivation film on top of the original rust prevention foundation can greatly prolong the service life of stainless steel after passivation treatment and reduce the probability of stainless steel rusting.

What are the advantages of stainless steel passivation treatment?

There are four advantages of stainless steel passivation treatment.

Firstly, salt tolerance testing can increase by 5-20 times.

Secondly, it can be reused, thereby reducing construction costs.

Thirdly, there is no need to change the color and size of the components.

Fourthly, the blue dot method that meets national standards will not show any blue dots even after 35 seconds.

The operation steps of stainless steel passivation treatment

Firstly, remove grease to ensure that the outer layer of the stainless steel workpiece is free of any stains.

Secondly, activation can remove all the rust on the outer layer of stainless steel workpieces, which can be activated by acid washing.

Thirdly, passivation must be thoroughly cleaned to prevent secondary corrosion and prevent the penetration of chemicals. Soak the stainless steel workpiece in a container containing stainless steel passivation solution for half an hour. If the salt spray requirement is high, the soaking time should exceed thirty minutes.

Fourthly, soak the stainless steel workpiece for three minutes to ensure the shape of the outer layer of the stainless steel workpiece and that there are no threads or blind holes.

Fifthly, use ultrapure water and clean it with flowing and clean water to ensure that there is no residual dirt on the outer layer of the stainless steel workpiece.
